The Caravan to America

21 October 2018

When thousands of people walk over 1500 miles to a place, it’s more than a mere destination. At some point, it becomes symbolic and mythical. The place represents a better life, a new start, an escape from misery.

I’ve never looked on a place like that, myself. I’m lucky enough to have been born inside one, but I reckon I’d feel pretty loyal toward the country that gave my family and me safety and a chance to start again.

Seems to me, that caravan of people coming to America should be considered our latest wave of dedicated volunteers. Such a long journey must demonstrate resolve and endurance and hope. Aren’t these American values? Aren’t we in dire need of more of those? Why aren’t we eagerly awaiting their arrival, ready to provide them care, relief and friendship?

With near full-employment, the lowest crime and the smallest illegal immigration in years, why not say, “welcome, folks; rest easy, now.”?
