Immigration Protest San Diego Waterfront Park

30 June 2018

At least 6000 protestors gathered at Waterfront Park in San Diego this morning to protest US immigration policy. Enrique Morones, founder of Border Angels, delivered the keynote speech in which he denounced the separation of families and denial of asylum for immigrants. He gave a message about the strength that lies in diversity.

San Diego Police Department and Sheriff County Deputies kept a low profile–no riot gear was in view and they mainly kept to the streets for traffic duty. During the two-mile march through downtown, they were frequently engaged by the crowd. Several demonstrators shook hands and thanked cops for their help with the protest.

As marchers returned to Waterfront Park for the conclusion, a guy with a “build the wall” sign taunted them. Protestors argued and chanted at him. Eventually, someone tried to kype the sign–ripped it out of his hands–but dropped, it, went back for it, got physical with the fellow and shoved him to the ground, picked up the sign, then dropped it again to sprint away from several cops, who quickly tackled and cuffed him. Very exciting.

Meanwhile, another charged up protester jumped on the sign and began tearing it up, which earned her a elbow lock from the deputies. Ouch.
